The Perfect Order of the Universe: How the Well-Ordered Cosmos Testifies to the Creator’s Existence

An Invitation to Reflect

In the Qur’an, we find repeated calls to contemplate the perfect creation of Allah, which astounds the intellect and touches the hearts of believers. Allah says about the creation that it is:

The handiwork of Allah, who perfected all things.

Al-Naml: 88

And Allah says:

And on the earth are signs for those of sure faith.

Al-Dhariyat: 20

And Allah says:

Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of the night and the day, are signs for those of understanding.

Aal-Imran: 190

These verses urge us to reflect on the precision and perfection in Allah’s creation, demonstrating that this perfection serves as irrefutable evidence of the Creator’s existence.

When we ponder Allah’s creation, we find that everything in the universe operates with precise order, from the motion of planets and stars in the heavens to the complexity of living cells in all creatures. All of this leads us to the belief in the existence of a magnificent Creator who perfected everything He created. These verses call us to observe the world around us and search for the signs of precision in every aspect of this vast cosmos.

The difference between the argument from creation—which was discussed in another article—and the argument from precision lies in their perspectives. The argument from creation examines how things come into existence from nothing and how this points to the existence of a Creator. Meanwhile, the argument from precision focuses on the order and accuracy in everything after its creation, showcasing the wisdom and power of the Creator. This demonstrates that the universe is not merely present but is organized and finely tuned in a way that cannot be the result of randomness or chance.

The Basis of the Argument

The argument from precision and order is based on two main foundations:

1. Sensory perception of order and accuracy in the universe.
2. The rational principle that everything is precise and ordered must have a designer.

First Sensory Perception

Sensory perception allows us to witness precision and order in everything around us. Wherever we turn our eyes, we find meticulous systems and harmonious designs in nature, as if reading an open book narrating the grandeur of creation.

• The Cosmos: Consider the motion of planets in their orbits, gliding through space without collision, governed by specific gravitational laws with impeccable precision. Reflect on the water cycle in nature—how water evaporates from seas and oceans, condenses in the sky, and falls as rain to revive the earth. Look up at the sky, where the sun and moon each travel in their orbits, creating a balanced system essential for life. The sun emits light and heat in a precise, unwavering pattern, granting warmth and life to the earth. The moon reflects the sun’s light, illuminating the dark nights and regulating tides with its gravitational pull. The stars, fixed in their specific locations, adorn the night sky with their beauty and guide sailors across seas. These celestial bodies are not scattered randomly but are arranged in a precise harmony, all testifying to the Creator’s power and magnificence.
• Nature and Wildlife: Consider the diversity and adaptability of animals to their environments. Birds, with their delicate wings, glide gracefully through the air, their songs echoing with natural melodies. Fish swim in the depths of the oceans, equipped with respiratory systems and luminous organs to survive in complete darkness. The earth teems with creatures of all sizes, each uniquely designed to suit its way of life and fulfill its needs with precision.
• The Human Body: Reflect on the human being, who embodies the greatest evidence of the Creator’s precision. From the cells that grow and multiply to the organs that work in harmony, and the mind that thinks and innovates, humanity is a masterpiece of design. Allah says: "We will show them Our signs in the horizons and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that it is the truth." (Fuṣṣilat: 53)

The signs in the vast universe and within our own bodies clearly point to this precision. A person does not need to look far to realize the power of this argument; it only requires contemplation with insight to see the evidence vividly.

This exploration of precision and harmony in creation calls us to appreciate the greatness of the Creator and affirm His wisdom and power. Through reflection on these signs, we deepen our faith and recognition of the truth: that the perfectly ordered and precise universe cannot exist without an all-knowing, all-wise Creator.

In addition to personal reflection, scientists specializing in natural sciences have also attested to the remarkable precision in the universe. Their deep study of the cosmos has led them to acknowledge the impossibility of attributing such complexity to mere chance. Among the many statements, one from Professor Allan Sandage, one of the most renowned astronomers of our time, stands out. He stated:"The world is too complicated in all its parts and interconnections to be due to chance alone. I am convinced that the existence of life with all its order in every living being is exquisitely tuned.[25]"

Second The Essential Rational Principle

This principle asserts that everything precise and orderly must have a designer. It is a concept easily grasped through innate reasoning and sound intellect. Let’s illustrate this principle with two simple examples:

Example One: Imagine walking along a beach and seeing scattered marine debris. You naturally recognize that the waves caused this random arrangement, not an intentional act. However, if you came across a sandcastle intricately carved with fine details, you would immediately recognize that someone intentionally crafted it with skill and purpose. This realization is intuitive and does not require further explanation; it is simply understood by the mind’s innate reasoning.

Example Two: Suppose you arrive at school one morning and find a broken window caused by a ball. When you ask the children outside if they broke it intentionally, they deny it. In this case, their claim might be plausible since breaking the glass could result from an unintentional and random act. However, if the next day you find the window perfectly repaired and ask the school guard who fixed it, and he replies, “It repaired itself unintentionally,” you would not believe him. Fixing a window with precision requires intention, skill, and a conscious actor.

These simple examples demonstrate how deeply ingrained the principle of causality is in our innate reasoning. A sound intellect cannot abandon this principle, as it recognizes that orderly and precise actions cannot arise from randomness. This principle requires no additional proof, as it is self-evident and universally acknowledged by human nature.

Conclusion

Through sensory perception and the essential rational principle, we conclude that perfectly ordered and precise creations must have a knowledgeable and wise Creator. Every aspect of this universe, from the smallest living organism to the largest galaxy, testifies to this precision and order, affirming the existence of a Creator.

This all-knowing Creator is the One who masterfully designed this universe, inviting us to reflect on His wondrous signs within the cosmos and within ourselves. Such contemplation leads us to certainty in His existence and greatness.

These truths encourage us to ponder the Creator’s magnificence and ability. They compel us to recognize that the universe, with its exquisite order and precision, is indisputable evidence of Allah’s existence. Reflecting on this evidence draws us closer to acknowledging His greatness, deepening our faith and strengthening our certainty in His wisdom and power.
