How Can We Believe in the Existence of God Even Though We Do Not See Him? When Evidence Is Stronger Than Vision
Key Questions
1. How can we believe in the existence of God even though we do not see Him? 2. Why do we not see God in this world? 3. How can we believe in something we do not see? 4. What are the proofs for the existence of God? 5. Does not seeing God conflict with believing in Him?
Article Summary
The article discusses how to believe in the existence of God even though we do not see Him, explaining that this question is superficial and fails to grasp the true nature of this world as a testing ground. God’s wisdom required that faith be based on the unseen, in order to distinguish the true believer. The article clarifies that believing in what is unseen is foundational to our daily lives—we believe in history, geography, and scientific laws without direct visual proof. It then explains how the proofs for God’s existence—from innate nature, the cosmic order, and the design in creation—are stronger than mere visual perception, making belief in Him an inherent and firmly rational conviction.
Introduction
Some people pose the question as if they have perfected doubt: "How can you believe in a God you have not seen?" As if they have forgotten that our world overflows with truths that the eye has not seen and the hand has not touched! How strange it is for those who make visual perception the only path to certainty, unaware that the heart has insight, the mind a light, and the soul an understanding that goes beyond the limits of the eye.
Do these people not realize that even the force of gravity, which holds them, is hidden from their sight? Or do they deny the power of magnetism because it is not seen by the naked eye? How many established truths in our lives have not been seen or touched!
Let the skeptics know that this world is a testing ground, and that the wisdom of the Creator decreed that faith in Him should be based on the unseen. If everything were apparent to the eye, faith would have no meaning, there would be no wisdom in trial, and no value in choice. Thus, believing in the unseen is the criterion that distinguishes those who truly believe from those who seek excuses for denial.
So, let us explore how faith in the Creator—even if we do not see Him—is an unquestionable certainty, and how the proofs of His existence are clearer than everything we see with our eyes.
Scientific Realities That Expose the Superficiality of the Question
When we face the question, “How can we believe in the existence of God even though we do not see Him?”, we need a deep scientific analysis that reveals the superficiality of this inquiry from several aspects. Belief in what we do not see is not an exception in our lives; rather, it is the foundation upon which most of our knowledge and sciences are built.
First This World Is a Testing Ground... A Religious Reality and Divine Wisdom
Contemplation of the revelations and the reality of life reveals a clear truth: God, exalted be He, created this world as a testing ground and trial. God says:
[It is He] Who created death and life, that He may test you which of you is best in deed; and He is the Exalted in Might, the Oft-Forgiving.
Al-Mulk: 2
Life and death were created for a great purpose, which is the testing of mankind.
The Quran confirms this truth in many verses. God says:
Do the people think that they will be left to say, ‘We believe’ and they will not be tested’ And We certainly tested those before them, so will you not be tested? And Allah will surely make evident those who are truthful, and He will surely make evident the liars.
Al-‘Ankabūt: 2-3
Thus, trial is a divine tradition that never fails, and a divine law that never changes.
One of the implications of this trial is that the evidences of faith are clear to those who reflect and ponder, yet they are not coercive to force people into belief. God says:
And your Lord would not have destroyed the cities for wrongdoing while their people were reformers.
Yūnus: 99
From the wisdom of this trial:
- Distinguishing the True Believer: If God were manifest to the eye, everyone would be forced to believe without choice. God says:“And We will surely test you until We make evident those who strive among you and the patient, and We will test your affairs.” (Muhammad: 31)
- Raising Ranks: The trial is a means to elevate the ranks of the believers. As God says: “Or do you think that you will enter Paradise while Allah has not yet made evident those of you who fight in His cause and made evident those who are patient?” (Ᾱl-'Imrān: 142)
- Manifesting True Worship: Belief in the unseen is the highest form of servitude. God says: “This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah—Who believe in the unseen...” (Al-Baqarah: 2-3)
God has made this life a miniature model of the test in everything. A student is tested in his studies, an employee is tried at work, and a merchant is tested in his business—all are training in patience, sincerity, and integrity. And if we reflect on life, we find that the greatest successes come after the hardest tests, and the strongest personalities are those who have passed through severe trials. Similarly, faith becomes stronger and more entrenched when it comes from reflection, contemplation, and conviction—not from direct vision that would remove the element of choice.
Second The Nature of Faith... An Integrated Epistemological System
It is mistaken to think that faith is mere blind acceptance or a leap in the dark. In truth, faith is an integrated epistemological system that combines the light of revelation with rational proofs, cosmic signs, and the indications of innate nature. The Holy Quran refers to this integrated approach when it says: “We will show them Our signs in the horizons and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that it is the truth.” (Fuṣṣilat: 53)
When we reflect on the nature of faith, we find that it rests on four essential pillars that complement each other. First, there is divine revelation, the primary source and foundation of certain knowledge, wherein the Creator informs us about Himself and the realities of existence. Then, there are rigorous rational proofs that address the mind with the language of logic and demonstration. Next, there are the cosmic signs scattered in every atom of this existence, testifying to the existence of the Creator and proclaiming His wisdom. Finally, there is deep innate perception—an internal feeling within the human soul of a great Creator.
Perhaps one of God’s greatest favors upon us is that He made revelation confirm what is in the innate nature, in harmony with what a sound mind indicates, and corroborated by the signs in the universe. God says:
Then do they not reflect upon the Quran? If it had been from [any] other than Allah, they would have found within it much contradiction.
Al-Nisā: 82
Had faith depended solely on visual perception, there would have been no test and no obligation. God says:
And even if We had sent down to them the angels and the dead spoke to them and We gathered together every [created] thing in front of them, they would not have believed except for what Allah wills.
Al-An’ām: 111
Thus, the issue is not about visual perception, but rather about a heart prepared and a soul inclined to contemplate the divine and cosmic signs.
That is why the Holy Quran always combines revelation and the cosmos in pointing to the Creator. When it mentions its successive signs, it invites reflection; and when it mentions its cosmic signs, it calls for deep thought. This combination of the two sources—revelation and the universe—along with the application of reason and the consistency of innate nature, leads to complete certainty.
Faith, in this sense, is like a well-constructed building in which all elements integrate: revelation provides certain truths, reason offers logical proofs, the universe presents tangible signs, and innate nature gives deep internal conviction. When these elements come together, a person reaches a level of certainty far surpassing that which comes from mere visual perception.
Third Scientific Faith in What We Do Not Perceive
A striking paradox in the skeptics’ stance is that they demand to see God visually, while they fully believe in scientific truths that cannot be seen with the naked eye! Modern science itself is fundamentally based on faith in forces and phenomena that are invisible yet inferred from their effects.
For example, when you use your mobile phone to communicate with someone thousands of kilometers away, you believe in the existence of radio waves that travel through space carrying your voice and image. These waves cannot be seen by the naked eye, yet their effects are tangible and undeniable. Is it reasonable, then, to believe in unseen radio waves and then demand to see the Creator of this universe in order to believe in Him?
And when an apple falls from a tree, we believe in an unseen force that draws it to the ground. This force—called gravity—cannot be seen, touched, or smelled, but we firmly believe in it because we observe its effects in every motion and stillness. In fact, this unseen force governs the movement of planets and stars in their orbits with astonishing precision. Should this not invite us to reflect: How can we believe in an unseen force that moves celestial bodies, yet hesitate to believe in the Creator who designed and manages this system?
If we look at the very basis of matter itself, we find that it is made up of atoms and molecules too small to be seen with the naked eye. Everything your eyes see—mountains, seas, trees—is actually composed of atoms that are invisible. Yet scientists firmly believe in their existence because their effects and interactions confirm them.
Even more astonishing is that scientists have discovered that most components of the universe are invisible! What we see of stars and galaxies is only a small fraction of the universe, while the majority consists of what they call “dark matter” and “dark energy,” which make up about 95% of the universe’s content. These are completely invisible, yet their effects on the movement of galaxies and the expansion of the universe are clear.
Even the electromagnetic field that surrounds us from every direction—which we use daily, from lighting a lamp to operating a computer—cannot be seen by the naked eye. But can any rational person doubt its existence?
If modern science is based on believing in unseen forces and phenomena and relies on inferring them from their effects, should we not apply the same approach in believing in the Almighty? The manifestations of His power and wisdom fill the universe—from the smallest atoms to the largest galaxies. God says:
And on the earth are signs for the certain [in faith] and in yourselves. Then will you not see?
Al-Dhāriyāt: 20-21
Fourth Faith in Our Daily Lives... Believing in What We Do Not See Every Moment
A careful observer of our daily lives will discover a striking truth: most of our knowledge and convictions are based on belief in things we do not see with our eyes! Every moment we make decisions, build stances, and accept information based on trust and inference—not on direct observation.
For instance, when we read in history books about the rise of the Abbasid state or the fall of Andalusia, we firmly believe in these events even though we did not witness them. We accept detailed accounts of the lives, decisions, and battles of the caliphs, relying on the documentation of trustworthy historians and reliable narrators. So why do we accept historical accounts about events from over a thousand years ago, yet hesitate to accept God's account of Himself in His Holy Book?
In science, we accept complex scientific theories and laws without personally conducting experiments. How many of us have tested the laws of thermodynamics or other physical laws ourselves? We accept these scientific truths because we trust the methodology and integrity of the scientists who convey the results of their research.
In our human relationships, we deal every day with feelings and emotions that we cannot see with our eyes. We believe in the love of parents, trust in the loyalty of a friend, and feel assured by the affection of a relative—even though these feelings cannot be seen. We infer them from their effects and manifestations in behavior and actions.
In our digital age, we interact with a whole world of virtual information that we believe in without direct observation. We trust our bank balances displayed on our phone screens, believe in the validity of electronic transfers, and accept information from reliable online sources.
Indeed, our daily lives are full of decisions made on the basis of trust in things we do not see. We board airplanes trusting in the ability of a pilot we have never seen; we take medicine believing in its efficacy based on a doctor’s recommendation; we eat food and drink water, trusting in their safety without analyzing every meal in a laboratory.
If a person in his daily life believes in all these realities without direct sight—relying on inference, documentation, and trust—how can he not believe in the Creator of this universe, whose signs testify to His existence, whose proofs indicate His wisdom, and whose creations proclaim His power?
Fifth Evidence of Existence... When the Proofs Are Stronger Than Visuals
God has instilled in the human soul a deep sense of His existence—a pure innate nature that perceives the Creator even before one learns proofs or hears evidence. God says:
So set your face toward the religion, inclining to truth. [Adhere to] the fitrah of Allah upon which He has created [all] people. No change should there be in the creation of Allah. That is the correct religion…
Al-Rūm: 30
This innate nature is manifested in universal human phenomena that can only be explained by an inherent sense of a higher Creator. In every time and place, humans feel an inner need to turn toward a Supreme Creator. Thus, no society in history has ever been completely devoid of religiosity, even if their understanding of God deviated. God says:
And when your Lord took from the children of Adam - from their loins - their descendants and made them testify concerning themselves, [saying to them], ‘Am I not your Lord?’ They said, ‘Yes, we have testified.’
Al-A'rāf: 172
One manifestation of this innate nature is that no matter how deep one falls into atheism and denial, when calamities overwhelm and dangers surround, the heart automatically turns to a capable Creator to seek refuge. God says:
But when they embarked on a ship, they supplicated Allah, sincere to Him in religion, but when He delivered them to the land, at once they became of those who associate others with Him.
Al-‘Ankabūt: 65
In addition to this pure innate nature, we find in the universe a precise order that testifies to the existence of an All-Knowing, Wise Creator. The physical laws governing the universe are finely tuned with astonishing precision that cannot be the result of chance. If the strength of gravity, the nuclear force, or the electromagnetic constant were altered by even a minute percentage, the universe as we know it could not exist. This fine-tuning of the cosmic constants clearly points to the existence of a wise Designer.
Consider the movement of celestial bodies—how they follow their orbits with astounding regularity, never advancing a moment too soon nor delaying. God says: “It is not for the sun to overtake the moon, nor does the night outstrip the day. They float each in an orbit.” (Ya-Sīn: 40) This marvelous system governing billions of stars and galaxies testifies to the existence of a wise manager.
When we look at the realm of biology, we find another sign of power and wisdom. In every living cell—too small to be seen by the naked eye—there is a complex informational system (DNA) containing precise instructions for building the organism and running its systems. This complex informational system, whose precision and efficiency surpasses the latest achievements of science, how can it exist without a Creator?
Then consider the integration of the biological systems in the human body. The heart beats, the lungs breathe, the liver purifies the blood, the kidneys filter toxins, the stomach digests food—and every organ performs its function in perfect harmony. This astonishing integration in the biological systems testifies to the existence of a wise Creator.
Thus, the proofs for God’s existence manifest on three integrated levels: the pure innate nature that directly perceives the Creator, the cosmic order that testifies to the existence of a wise Designer, and the complex design in living beings that indicates the presence of an Omnipotent Creator. Together, they form an integrated system of proofs that are stronger than mere visual perception.
Conclusion: When the Light of Certainty Manifests
After this reflective journey into the nature of faith, the reality of this world, and the proofs for God’s existence, it becomes clear that the question “How can we believe in what we do not see?” is in truth a superficial question that does not grasp the nature of faith or the wisdom of the Creator in making this world a place of trial and testing.
In His sublime wisdom, God made faith in Him unseen so that the sincere believer may be distinguished from others. God says:
This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah—Who believe in the unseen…
Al-Baqarah: 2-3
Had faith depended on direct vision, there would be no meaning to the obligation, no value in the choice, and no reward for the believer’s faith.
We have seen how belief in what we do not see is not a novelty in our lives; rather, it is the foundation of most of our knowledge and dealings. We believe in history that we did not witness, accept the existence of lands we have never visited, and trust in forces and scientific phenomena that we do not see with our eyes. So why make visual perception a prerequisite for believing in the Creator?
Moreover, God has not left us in confusion but has provided evidences and proofs far stronger than mere visual observation. He has instilled in our innate nature a deep sense of His existence, embedded signs throughout the universe that testify to His power, and placed within ourselves and everything around us proofs that proclaim His wisdom. God says: “Is there a doubt in Allah, Creator of the heavens and the earth?” (Ibrāhīm: 10)
Let the believer’s heart be at ease; his faith in God is based on solid foundations of innate nature, reason, and conclusive proofs. Know that not seeing God in this world is not a deficiency in faith, but rather a part of God’s perfect wisdom in creation and in setting the test. And be assured that what God has prepared for the believers in the Hereafter in terms of seeing Him is far greater and more enduring than any worldly pleasure. God says:
[Some] faces, that Day, will be radiant, looking at their Lord.
Al-Qiyamāh: 22-23
Thus, we conclude with firm certainty: Faith in God—even though He is unseen—is stronger, more secure, and more deeply established than everything we see with our eyes. What we see may deceive us, but what we perceive through our sound innate nature, clear mind, and conclusive proofs is the unshakable certainty.
