The Hijab: Worship and Dignity, Not Coercion and Backwardness
Introduction: Between Truth and Distortion
In our previous detailed articles, we established through clear and categorical evidence that true human dignity is only achieved and founded upon sincere faith in Allah Almighty and total submission to His command and law. We recognized with radiant clarity that the woman in Islam is a human of full, undiminished humanity, possessing the same human dignity and legal obligation as the man, while considering innate natural differences that the Wise Sharīʿah (Divine Law) accounted for with justice and wisdom.
We saw in detail how Qawāmah (guardianship) is a wise, balanced Divine system that achieves precise stability for the family and society, far removed from deviant cultural distortions and extreme ideological deviations.
Today, we address in comprehensive detail another important ruling of Allah Almighty concerning women—a ruling surrounded by fierce debate and targeted by aggressive, organized media and political campaigns: the Hijab.
The Hijab, which in its legal reality is an act of worship to Allah and obedience to His command, is portrayed today in the dominant Western media as a blatant symbol of oppression, injustice, backwardness, and reactionism. The believing woman who wears the Hijab, having chosen with her full free will to obey her Lord and commit to His law, is unjustly accused of being coerced, deprived of her will, or brainwashed by "reactionary" ideas.
Meanwhile, the woman who exposes her body is persistently presented as "liberated," "strong," "aware," and "modern"—even if her exposure is, in reality, a submissive response to immense social pressure or crushing media influence. The proof of this is that she often finds great embarrassment and shame in wearing the Hijab as a free choice representing her true liberty—a choice that would require real strength to repel the sweeping social current that rejects and fights the Hijab.
In this detailed article, we will examine the Hijab from a deep, foundational, and holistic perspective, so the reader may clearly understand that it is not the ugly, distorted image painted by its resentful opponents, but a wise Divine ruling that achieves great benefits for the woman, the man, and society as a whole.
Trial Through Commands: The True Test of Sincerity in Servitude
It is among the established and constant norms of Allah Almighty to test His servants with commands and prohibitions that may conflict with their whims, natural inclinations, and innate desires. This great trial is what clearly reveals the reality of sincere faith; it distinguishes the true believer in their servitude to Allah from the false claimant who worships their own whims.
Allah Almighty says with total clarity: “Do the people think that they will be left to say, 'We believe' and they will not be tried?” [al-ʿAnkabūt: 2]. True faith is total submission to the command and prohibition of Allah Almighty, even if it contradicts whim, desire, or natural inclination. The sincere believer is the one who says with their tongue, heart, and limbs—as the noble Ṣaḥābah (Companions) (may Allah be pleased with them) said: “We hear and we obey.” [al-Baqarah: 285].
Examples of Arduous Trials Through Commands
Consider the example of prayer, which the man is commanded to perform in congregation in the mosque, while the woman is not. This is a heavy and arduous practical test. Only those who truly love Allah and prioritize His pleasure over their own desires succeed and remain steadfast in it.
Sleep is sweet, a warm bed is comfortable, and the body craves rest. Yet, the sincere believer leaves his warm bed, resists heavy drowsiness, and goes out in the biting cold and pitch darkness to stand before Allah for the Fajr (dawn) prayer. He does not do this for a worldly interest or material benefit, but solely because Allah commanded him, and because obedience to Allah is more beloved to him than anything else.
Similarly, consider the arduous fast. The body intensely needs water and food, the soul naturally craves them, and severe thirst dries the throat. Yet, the sincere believer strongly abstains from food and drink despite his intense need for them. He bears the pangs of hunger and the pain of thirst with patience to prove through his actions that his love for Allah Almighty is stronger than his love for all these natural desires.
Two Types of People Regarding Commands
Here, the decisive difference between two contradictory types of people appears:
The First Type: Those who always prioritize the command of Allah over their whims and desires. They say through their actions and words: "I love what Allah loves, and I hate what Allah hates," even if it contradicts my natural inclination. This is the true believer whose ultimate goal is the pleasure of Allah.
The Second Type: Those who prioritize their whims and desires over the command of Allah. They persistently search for anomalous interpretations and weak excuses, following doubtful concessions and rejected ambiguities. They want a "comfortable" religion that suits their desires, not a true religion that reforms their soul.
The Hijab: A Trial Revealing the Reality of Servitude
The legal Hijab is among these great Divine commands that clearly reveal the reality of servitude. A woman, by her innate nature, loves adornment, beauty, and appearing in the best possible form. She naturally inclines toward showing her beauty and receiving admiration and praise from others.
However, Allah Almighty, in His wisdom, commanded her to wear the Hijab—to cover her beauty and charms from non-related men, preserving her beauty for those whom Allah has made it lawful. Here, the true test appears: Will this woman prioritize the command of the All-Knowing, All-Wise Allah over her natural inclination and innate desire? Or will she prioritize her desire over the command of her Lord?
The sincere believing woman says with total contentment and submission: "I hear and I obey the command of my Lord." She wears her Hijab with a tranquil heart and a clear conscience, for she knows with certainty that the pleasure of Allah is more precious than all fleeting looks of admiration, and that obedience to Him is more honorable than all vanishing worldly adornments.
Sexual Instinct in Men: The Reality Ignored by Idealists
Let us speak with complete frankness about a reality that many avoid acknowledging, or even try to deny: When a man’s eye falls upon a woman for the first time, his initial focus is not on her intellect, her culture, her education, or her social status. It is directed, first and foremost, toward her body and external appearance. This is a rooted, innate reality, no matter how much dreamers try to beautify it with flowery language or deny it through stubbornness.
Whether a man meets a woman on the street, at work, or sees her on a screen, his initial attraction is drawn to her physical form and charms. In that first moment, he does not ask about her academic degrees or her bank balance. All these intellectual considerations—if they appear at all—come later, when serious thinking about a permanent legal union (marriage) begins.
Sexual Desire: A Divine Wisdom, Not a Human Flaw
This strong physical desire is not a blameworthy deficiency or a shameful flaw in the man; rather, it is an innate, natural instinct placed by the Wise Creator for a profound reason. Were it not for the intensity of this sexual desire and the strength of this physical attraction, the man would never bear the heavy and exorbitant burdens of marriage.
These burdens include a massive financial Mahr (dowry) that may exhaust years of savings, continuous and permanent maintenance for as long as the marriage lasts, and the immense responsibility for a wife, children, and their ever-renewing needs—alongside countless religious, legal, and moral obligations.
If a man only sought intellectual companionship or spiritual harmony, he would find that easily and at no cost among his male friends. A true friend provides deep dialogue and sincere companionship without requiring a dowry or permanent financial maintenance. Yet, Allah in His wisdom placed this strong physical desire in the man so that it would become a powerful motive for him to pay the Mahr, provide maintenance, and patiently carry the heavy burden of responsibility—all so that what Allah forbade may become lawful for him through the contract of marriage.
Lust Alone is Insufficient to Build a Successful Marriage
This realistic perspective does not, in any way, mean that physical desire alone is sufficient to build a solid, stable, and happy marital life. A rational, mature, and righteous man—especially in religious and committed societies—does not choose his lifelong partner and the mother of his children based solely on fleeting physical attraction. Rather, he looks—alongside that—for sound religion and noble character. He searches seriously for true psychological compatibility and deep intellectual harmony.
Physical desire may be the initial spark that catches his attention, but the serious step toward building a lasting marital relationship, in which this woman is the respected keeper of his home and a righteous mother and educator for his children, is ultimately built on the extent of her religious commitment, her moral integrity, her steady good character, and her sincere fear of Allah Almighty.
The wise and discerning man realizes with full awareness that physical beauty inevitably fades with time, and youthful vigor certainly departs with the passing days. Along with them, love built solely on fleeting physical lust inevitably vanishes. In contrast, noble, steady character and sincere, true religiosity are the only real guarantors for the permanence of happiness and the continuation of affection and mercy in the strongest and happiest marital relationships.
In fact, many rational men—Easterners and Westerners alike—clearly see that if the only point of attraction for a woman is her physical beauty, it makes it psychologically easier to part with her and separate. If he does not find in her the noble character that draws him close, the sincere affection that endears her to him, and the true loyalty that brings him contentment, her physical beauty alone will not keep him with her. Since outward physical beauty alone is abundant and found in many women, why would he commit to one who possesses nothing else?
When is the Hijab Required? The Matter of Presence and Absence
The legal Hijab is a ruling closely linked to the presence of a non-related man (Ajnabī) or the strong probability of his presence. A woman in her private home with her Maḥārim (unmarriageable male relatives)—such as her father, brother, son, paternal uncle, or maternal uncle—has no obligation to wear the Hijab. In her complete privacy with her husband, there is absolutely no Hijab between them. With other women, she is only required to cover what constitutes the general ʿAwrah (private areas).
The full legal Hijab becomes mandatory when the woman is certain or strongly suspects that a non-related man may see her or has the potential to view her. If she leaves her home for the public market, goes to a workplace, is in an open public space, or even in her private home when non-related men enter, then the full legal Hijab is required. This is because the legal reason (ʿIllah) is clearly present: the existence of those among non-related men who might look at her, or the strong probability thereof.
Therefore, the Hijab is not a permanent, continuous restriction on the woman at all times, nor is it a constant prison. Rather, it is a wise, temporary legal protection that the woman wears when there is a real need for it and removes with full freedom in safety and security. It is like the protective shield worn by a brave warrior in the heat of battle to protect himself, which he sets aside in times of peace and safety.
Why the Hijab for Women and Not Men?
Among the many questions persistently raised about the legal Hijab is: Why were women commanded to cover completely while men were not given a similar command? Is this not considered unjust discrimination and unfair differentiation?
The clear, logical answer lies in a correct understanding of the nature of wise legal obligations and their just distribution between the genders according to their capacities and roles:
The Man is Obligated to Go Out for Maintenance
The man is legally commanded and fully obligated to provide comprehensive maintenance for his family, including his wife and children. This obligatory maintenance includes providing suitable housing, adequate clothing, sufficient food and drink, and all the necessities of a dignified life.
This heavy financial obligation necessitates, by logical necessity, a permanent going out for work, earning, and seeking provision. A man does not have the option of sitting comfortably at home and sufficing with what others have; he is legally and rationally bound to serious pursuit and hard work to obtain provision for his family. If the man were also tasked with the full Hijab like the woman during this necessary going out, he would inevitably fall into extreme hardship and great, unbearable difficulty in most cases.
The Woman is Spiritually and Legally Provided For
As for the woman, her financial maintenance is fully covered by law according to the texts of the Qur’ān and Sunnah. She has the right to comprehensive maintenance from her legal guardian: the father must provide for his daughter, the husband for his wife, the son for his mother when in need, and the brother for his sister in the absence of the father.
This is an established, clear legal right for her, which she may claim whenever she wishes, and both Islamic Sharīʿah and man-made laws strongly guarantee it for her. Her going out for work and earning—in the original legal sense—is a free choice for her, not a necessity forced upon her. If her going out to work is a free choice in its origin, then there is no logical embarrassment or injustice in her being commanded to wear the full Hijab during this optional outing.
Responding to Contemporary Objections
However, someone might object: "Our reality today is completely different; millions of women in the world work and go out daily to earn exactly like men. Do they not deserve, by justice, a relaxation of the heavy Hijab?"
The clear legal answer comes from several important perspectives:
Visual Stimulation: There is a significant, scientifically established difference between the man and the woman in the degree of susceptibility to visual sexual stimulation. The man—as we have explained in detail—is stimulated by visual sexual scenes much more than the woman. This is a scientific fact proven by many studies and observed in daily experience. The Hijab wisely protects against this sexual stimulation that harms both parties: the looking man and the looked-at woman.
Physical Charms: Prominent and clear physical charms are, in the vast majority of cases, found in women rather than men. A woman, by her innate nature and biological makeup, possesses points of outward beauty and clear sexual attraction far exceeding those of the man. The Wise Sharīʿah commands the covering of prominent points of attraction and clear stimulation, not merely covering for the sake of covering without wisdom.
Choice vs. Necessity: Most working women today in Islamic societies do not work out of actual, forced necessity, but by a free choice to improve their standard of living. A married woman can easily demand full maintenance from her husband for all her needs, and Islamic Sharīʿah strictly obligates him to do so. An unmarried girl has the right to obligatory maintenance from her father or her brother.
If a woman chooses external work while having someone to provide her with sufficient maintenance, this is her personal free choice, and it never drops the established legal obligation of the Hijab. Even if she argues that her guardian provides the basic necessities—housing, clothing, and food—but she wants more money for a more luxurious life, the answer remains clear: the goal of the work then is to achieve extra luxury, which is a personal choice. The absence of this luxury does not result in real corruption in religion or worldly life; therefore, it is not logically sound for this choice to drop an established Divine obligation.
Maintenance is an Obligatory Right, Not a Favor or Charity
Let it be known with absolute certainty that a man’s financial maintenance (Nafaqah) of a woman is a fixed legal obligation, exactly like Zakāh (obligatory charity), but even more binding and prioritized. Just as the wealthy person must never act as if they are doing the poor a favor by giving the prescribed Zakāh—since it is a settled right Allah Almighty mandated for the poor from the wealthy, and Allah alone is the true Owner of all wealth—likewise, a man does not bestow a favor upon a woman through obligatory maintenance. It is her established right, mandated upon him by Sharīʿah.
In fact, the man who provides is immensely rewarded for this obligatory spending. He receives a great recompense and will be held strictly to account if he falls short or withholds it. The legal texts strongly urging maintenance for women are numerous, including the statement of the Prophet : “It is enough sin for a man that he withholds the provision from those he possesses.” [Sāḥīḥ Muslim: 996]. And his statement : “A dinar you spend in the path of Allah, a dinar you spend to free a slave, a dinar you give in charity to the poor, and a dinar you spend on your family; the greatest of them in reward is the one you spend on your family.” [Sāḥīḥ Muslim: 995].
The believing man who truly fears Allah will never hesitate to provide full and sufficient maintenance for the women under his guardianship. He knows with certainty that this spending is one of the greatest acts of ʿIbādah (worship) and one of the most binding obligations placed upon him.
The Hijab: Wise Protection Against Gross Commodification
Among the loftiest wisdoms of the Hijab in Islam is the actual protection of the woman from becoming a cheap commercial commodity to be displayed and consumed. Islam, in its profound wisdom, restricts the full enjoyment of a woman’s body—through looking, touching, and sexual union—to the one who has shown the complete readiness to bear heavy responsibility and a serious, permanent commitment to full legal, moral, and ethical rights.
Through this wise system, Islam truly elevates the value of the woman. It ensures that full access to her and enjoyment of her beauty are closely linked to serious, permanent legal commitment, rather than fleeting, vanishing sexual desire.
The Displayed Commodity Loses Its Value
A woman who reveals her physical beauty and charms to everyone may attract the gaze of dozens or even hundreds of men everywhere. Many of them may express a strong desire for her and intense admiration.
However, there is a massive difference—a vast gulf—between a sincere, serious desire built on the firm conviction that this woman is the best choice for a righteous wife, an educator of children, and a life partner, and a superficial, fleeting sexual desire built only on a momentary visual stimulation that dies the moment the physical lust is satisfied.
A man who is accustomed to constantly looking at the bodies of women who display their beauty (Tabarruj), and who enjoys continuous visual pleasure without legal commitment or responsibility, will never be satisfied with one specific woman. Why settle for one when there are hundreds or thousands like her, or perhaps more beautiful? Outward physical beauty is abundant, and the beautiful body that ignited his lust today will inevitably bore him tomorrow; he will easily find another that is more "exciting."
Even if he marries a woman solely because her physical beauty appealed to him, this marriage is built on a fragile, shaky foundation. Deep down, once the initial lust withers, he will tell himself: "Why should I restrict my gaze and thoughts to her alone when she did not restrict her beauty and adornment to me?" He justifies his constant looking at others and his search for the "most beautiful" by noting that she displayed her charms to everyone before marriage, concluding that she does not truly deserve his exclusive loyalty. This corrupt logic is the natural result of unleashing sexual desire without boundaries.
The Hijab: A True Elevation of Human Value
By wearing the full legal Hijab, the wise and believing woman firmly refuses to be a cheap commercial commodity displayed in the contemporary "market of visual slavery." She proudly refuses to be judged or evaluated solely by superficial physical standards or to be sought merely for the satisfaction of a vanishing sexual urge.
She says through her Hijab, clearly and powerfully: "Whoever truly wants me must want me in my entirety—my mind, soul, and body together—and must commit to me fully, legally and morally, through the obligatory Mahr, permanent maintenance, complete care, and heavy responsibility. Only that serious, committed man truly deserves for me to reveal my full beauty and charms."
This is not an unjust deprivation of the woman’s rights; it is her true and great honoring. It is not a harsh restriction, but a wise and actual protection from being exploited as a body and consumed as a commodity, only to be discarded like a worn-out rag. The aware woman places herself in a high, noble station where she is only reached by those who truly deserve her.
The Hijab as True Strength and Sincere Freedom
The believing woman who chooses the legal Hijab with awareness and will is a woman who has conquered her own soul and whims before conquering the harsh pressures of society and the sweeping tides of media. With a strong will, she has overcome the desire for adornment and appearing in the most beautiful form—a very strong instinct that naturally drives a woman to display her beauty.
By sincere faith, she chose a loftier path: the path of pure servitude to Allah alone, rather than the humiliating slavery to lustful gazes.
True Confidence in Beauty
This woman is firmly confident in her true beauty. She does not need fleeting looks of admiration to confirm that she is attractive. She does not beg for praise from passersby nor solicit compliments from onlookers. Her true beauty is preserved for the one who deserves it through a real commitment, protected from those who do not value her correctly.
She sees with total awareness that she is too valuable to be linked to a "cheap" man who easily allows his wife to display her charms to other men. Indeed, he who is content with his wife being displayed to others is inevitably content with other women being displayed to him. Such a man is often a gluttonous seeker of more, never satisfied or content.
True Freedom and Sincere Strength
The aware woman in Hijab does not care for the fluctuating evaluations of society nor submit to the crushing pressures of the media. If displaying beauty becomes common in her society and the Hijab becomes "strange," she is the one who is truly free. She has consciously chosen what she sees as best for her despite immense challenges.
She is entirely free from the slavery of lustful gazes and free from the contemporary market of human commodification. She is truly strong because she swam against the current and stood firm when many others wavered and fell.
The Message of the Woman in Hijab to the World
The aware, believing woman in Hijab speaks to the entire world with clarity and strength: I am far greater than to be reduced entirely to a physical body. I am far deeper than to be evaluated only by an external appearance. I am far more precious and honorable than to be displayed as a cheap commercial commodity.
I am a servant of Allah alone, with no partner. I obey His command with total contentment, and I seek His pleasure with all my heart. I do not care for the resentment of those who are angry, nor for the admiration of those who are impressed.
I do not beg for a fleeting look of admiration from someone who has not proven, in reality and through action, that I truly deserve his full commitments. Nor do I solicit flattery and praise from someone whose transient, vanishing sexual lust has merely been ignited.
I belong to the noble, honorable man who elevated my true value through a serious, genuine, and permanent commitment; the one who did not accept for the women of the Muslims that which he does not accept for me—exposure, lack of Hijab, and vulgarity.
For I know with certainty that such a man's choice of me is a true and sincere one, not limited only to the aspect of superficial sexual desire—a weak foundation that the days and years only increase in obvious wither and painful apathy. Rather, he chose me based on firm grounds that the days and years only increase in closeness, love, and attachment. If he takes his sexual need from me, he does not kick me away or discard me as the people of animalistic lust do with the vulgar and lowly; rather, his true love increases in depth and firmness, and his heart ignites with genuine intimacy and permanent happiness.
That is the way of the noble, honorable, and generous man who is attracted, first and foremost, to a woman’s sound religion, noble character, complete chastity, and manifest integrity; only after all that does her physical beauty and outward radiance come into play.
I belong to the noble, honorable, and generous man, not to the vile, lowly, and fallen man.
This is true and sincere strength: for a woman to be what Allah Almighty intended for her to be, not what a corrupt society or a deviant media wants. To consciously and willfully choose the path of chastity, purity, and dignity in an age of blatant vulgarity, shameful nakedness, and moral collapse. To be the precious, protected, and preserved gold in an era of cheap, scattered, and broken earthenware.
Conclusion: The Full Truth About the Hijab
After this detailed journey in understanding the reality of the legal Hijab from its roots and foundations, we arrive with total clarity at a major truth that must be acknowledged and explicitly affirmed: The Hijab is not a piece of heavy cloth forced upon a poor woman to oppress and humiliate her. Rather, it is a conscious, free choice of the sincere believing woman who has understood her true value and realized her full dignity.
We have seen with total clarity how the legal Hijab is a true test of sincere servitude to Allah; it plainly reveals who prioritizes the command of the Wise Allah over her whim and desire, and who prioritizes her desire and whim over the command of her Lord and Creator.
We have seen in detail how the man's natural sexual instinct—which no one denies except a stubborn ignorant person or a lying deceiver—makes the legal Hijab a real necessity to protect the woman from being unjustly reduced to a physical body to be merely lusted after, instead of being appreciated and respected as a complete human being with an intellect, a soul, and dignity.
We understood clearly that the legal Hijab is not a heavy, permanent restriction at all times, but a wise legal protection for when there is a real need. We also saw that the woman is fully provided for financially by law, so her Hijab never prevents her from a dignified, stable, and happy life.
Furthermore, we saw that Islam, through this wise and just system, protects the woman from hideous commodification and cheap exploitation. It elevates her human value to a high level and restricts full access to her and total enjoyment of her beauty to the one who commits to her with a serious, genuine, and permanent commitment.
The strange and blatant paradox is that those who fight the Hijab fiercely in the name of "women's liberation" and "women's rights" are exactly those who have, in reality, turned her into a cheap commercial commodity displayed everywhere and consumed without mercy. They want her "free" only to reveal her body and expose her form to delight their lustful eyes; "strong" only to display her physical charms to satisfy their animalistic desires; and "liberated" only from the moral constraints and legal boundaries that actually protect her from hideous exploitation and cheap vulgarity.
What kind of false liberation is it that turns a poor woman into a lowly slave to the lustful gazes and animalistic desires of men? What kind of false strength is it that turns her into a cheap, displayed commodity?
As for the true, aware woman in Hijab, she is the one who is actually, truly, and sincerely free. She is entirely free from the slavery of a corrupt society and its harsh pressures; completely free from begging for cheap admiration and humiliating praise; and sincerely free from the modern, loathsome market of human slavery.
She is the truly strong one who bravely swims against the sweeping current, the sincerely confident one who never needs to confirm her beauty through the lustful gazes of passersby, and the noble, honorable one who proudly refuses to give her precious self to anyone who does not deserve her through a serious, genuine commitment.
In the end, the legal Hijab is not just a dry legal ruling to be obeyed without understanding; it is a comprehensive and precise Divine system that achieves for the woman her true and full dignity, for the man his psychological and moral stability, and for the entire society its purity, chastity, and cleanliness.
Whoever understands its great wisdom and deep philosophy commits to it out of firm conviction and total contentment. Whoever is ignorant of its clear reality and profound wisdoms fights it fiercely out of misunderstanding or followed whim.
The aware, sincere believing woman never waits for a corrupt society to understand the wisdom of the Hijab or accept it with contentment. She wears her legal Hijab with total certainty that she is upon the manifest truth, completely tranquil that she is obeying her Wise Creator, and truly proud that she consciously and willfully chose the noble and difficult path in an age of the cheap and vulgar.
She says through her actions and words with total clarity and strength: This is my free choice, this is my true freedom, and that is my full dignity. Whoever wills, let them believe with contentment; and whoever wills, let them disbelieve with resentment. As for me, I am a servant of Allah alone, with no partner. I obey His command with total contentment, and I seek His pleasure with all my heart. I do not care for the resentment of those who are angry, nor for the admiration of those who are impressed.
Allah Almighty knows best what reforms His servants, and He is the Guide to the Straight Path.
