The Argument of Specification: Why the Universe Is the Way It Is Have you ever wondered why the universe took on this exact form? Why does the sun shine with light instead of darkness? Why are the seas alive with creatures, and the air pure enough to breathe? Could it not have been different? These questions open the door to what scholars call the argument of specification. It reminds us that the world we live in could have been configured in countless other ways. Yet, what we see is a masterpiece—every element chosen and placed with purpose. The Qur’an draws our attention to this truth: “Say, have you considered: if Allah were to make the night perpetual until the Day of Resurrection, what deity other than Allah could bring you light? Will you not listen? Say, have you considered: if Allah were to make the day perpetual until the Day of Resurrection, what deity other than Allah could bring you a night in which you may rest? Will you not see?” [Sūrat al-Qaṣaṣ: 71–72] These verses remind us that night could have lasted forever, or day could have never ended. But Allah chose to alternate them—giving us light for work and darkness for rest. That choice, that specification, reveals will and wisdom.
